- In 1870 John Eller was living in Alden township, Hardin co. Iowa. The
records list his age at 48, born in Ind., works as a laborer, cant read
or write.
Angeline Rogers, age 28 is living with him, keeping house. I wondered if
they were married because until very recent years, women did not use
their maiden names when they were married. According to the records,
ANGELINE was born in Illinois.
According to the 1880 census the family is living in Williams, Hamilton
Co. Iowa. Acording to this census, at least 5 children were born to
Angeline and John Eller. Jennette, b ab 1869/70; Anna b 1873; Grant, b
1875; Florence b. Arpil 1875, Johnny b 1879- all born in Iowa. Again, the dates may be off 1-2 years depending on the month of the census compared to the month of birth and
again people didnt always keep close track of birthdates. A notice in
the Hamilton Freeman newspaper 23 March 1881 noted that John Eller of
Williams buried a four yr old child from that dreaded disease diptheria.
I believe this child is Johnny. Johnny does not appear on any other
records after th 1880 census, but all the other children do. I also
wonder if ANGELINE ROGERS ELLER also died of diptheria-she does not
appear on any records either after 1880.
In 1880, John Eller's daughter Maria is working as a hired girl with the Winslow Steams family. In 1880 John's parents Peter and Margaret are still alive and living in
Illyrid Township, Fayette Co., Iowa.
About 1893/94 many of the Eller family moved to homestead in Cascade
County, Montana. Jenettie and John Coulson, Maria and Charles Stone, and
Maria's son, Alfred, Florence and Fred Minard,Grant Eller, Annie Eller,
a few nephews of John Eller (one was named Abraham Lincoln Eller, the
other Simon Eller-sons of Daniel Eller, and frank Eller, son of Simon
Eller, brothers of John Eller) and John Eller himself. It appears that
John Eller probably died in Montana.
