  • Notes
    • James H. Eller served in both the Mexican-American war and in the Civil War. In the Mexican War, he served in Company A, 3rd Indiana Regiment (Infantry), under Col. Jim Lane. He participated in the battle of Monterey. In the Civil War, he enlisted 22 Aug 1862 in Company I, 82nd Indiana Regiment Volunteers, Under Colonel Morton, where he served as Wagon Master until disabled by a mule.
Two of his sons were also in the army.
We've seen research that shows a birth year of 1820, but we quote here, the research of Clarence Neff (20105 NE Kings Grade, Newberg, OR 97132) which is the most extensive we've seen.
Ms. Neff's research says he was injured "in a wagon accident" near Gallatin, TN in October 1862. (She does not name the mule!) She says a large ammunition box struck him in the back as the wagon tipped over. As a result had medical problems the rest of his life. His pension file contains many medical exams. His kidneys and liver were damaged. He was discharged with chronic hepatitis on 12 Jan 1863. During the last 25 years of his life he was unable to do manual labor and received a $17/month disability pension.
