    • He was known in Rowan County, North Carolina as John (Melcher, Melker,or Michael) Eller. It is important to note that Melchior was sometimes transcribed as Michael. This calls into questions some early Rowan County records for a Michael Eller that some interpret as referring to immigrant George Michael Eller, for whom no clear cut Rowan county record has been reported

      He signed his name John M. Eller with the M rotated clockwise approximately ninety degrees, a device to identify his signature from that of his relatives also named John Melker Eller.
