  • Notes
    • Henry Eller moved with his parrents from Virginia to Kentucky and later Indiana. He arrived in Indiana "in 1813, when he was almost 14."
According to Wayne M. Eller, in a chart he prepared 07 Jan 1935, Henry Eller was a Captain in the Civil War. He appears to have overstated his rank!
"A History of the Counties of Monroe and Brown, Indiana," 1884 (reproduction 1969), p.645-6, includes an extensive biographical sketch of Henry Eller. It reports, "Mr. Eller enlisted in three months service on 09 Jun 1862 and did guard duty at Indianapolis. In May 1864, he re-enlisted in Company K, 133 Indiana Infantry. His unit was on guard duty at Bridgeport, Ala. He was discharged in September, same year. While in the three months' service he was Sergeant of his company. During the last service he was also a Sergeant. While in the service, Mr. Eller lost his health, and has not been able to do a hard day's work since."
According to Wayne Eller, after his second marriage (1844), he moved to Nebraska and settled along what is known as the "Oregon trail," and several children about 1845-52 seem to have ties to Nebraska. But we are told he is burried back in Indiana in the Eller Family Cemetary. This leaves open the possibility he didn't go to Nebraska or didn't stay. And the 1884 book cited above, makes no mention of Nebraska although it clearly identifies the second wife and all their children and notes he "still resides" on a farm in the County.
"A History of Brown..." also notes he served as County Commissioner and Township Assessor. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The book also notes, "Politically, he is an active, staunch Republican." And this 1884 biographical sketch offers a couple minor and a couple major disputes with our record of Henry Eller. It lists the first wife as Velinda (not Belinda); it says the second wife's middle initial was W.; it lists a child as Susan V. (we show her as Vehene Susan Eller; we show Margaret Balinda and the book lists her as Melinda M.; and the book lists daughters Mary AND Laura (where we show one daughter Mary Laura; but since the book says there are eight children and lists nine, we believe the ONE child Mary Laura is probably correct; this is somewhat confirmed by his obituary which uses the exact same wording as the biographical sketch, but shows the daughter as Mary,L (Ward).
