    Biography of Joseph Burton Eller and his father, grandfather (Junious Eller) from Smyth County, Virginia.

  • Notes 
    • Jesse helped organize Company K of the 53rd Regiment, North Carolina, in the Civil War, and was commissioned as a 1st lieutenant. At the Battle of Gettysburg, and upon the death of the commanding officer, Jesse was promoted to the rank of captain. On 9 May 1864, Jesse was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness. He survived many famous battles and was with his company at Appomattox when General Robert E. Lee surrendered on 9 April 1865. He and his wife were the parents of twelve children, and lived near Atkins in Smyth County, Virginia, where they both died. [3]
