  • Notes
    • At one time the family owned three farms. The family lived on a large farm on the North prong ofLewis Fork Creek in
Stanton. Township, near the New Hope Baptist Church and the New Hope Academy.

He had a tannery where he tanned hides to make shoes for men, women, and children. He made shoes and harnesses for horses in his blacksmith's shop. He ran a store where they hauled merchandise by horse and wagon from Statesville, NC.

James and his family were very interested in education. They boarded young men and women so that they could go to school taught at New Hope Academy each year for several years. There were only three or four of these schools in Wilkes County. [3]
